Nach dem aktuellen Webometrics-Ranking der 50 besten afrikanischen Forschungszentren dominiert Südafrika mit 17 Zentren (1. Platz), das von Kenia mit 9 (2. Platz) und Algerien mit 5 Forschungszentren (3. Platz) gefolgt wird.
Die beklagenswerte und größte Überraschung ist das Fehlen von Nigeria; die größte Volkswirtschaft des Kontinents.
Die Webometrics Studie wird von einer Forschungsgruppe des Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), der größten öffentlichen Forschungseinrichtung in Spanien durchgeführt.
Im Glauben, dass das Internet das Hauptelement der Kommunikation und des Wissensaustausches ist, misst und bewertet Webometrics das Auftreten und das Impact vieler Institutionen der Welt übers Internet: Universitäten, Business-Schulen, Krankenhäusern und/oder Forschungszentren.
